Forsaken Eulogies: Indifference

Kaneem Smith

Forsaken Eulogies: Indifference is a site-specific commemorative earthwork at a historically African American indigent cemetery. Smith’s work, which incorporates her studies in anthropology, archeology and American history, is comprised of 30 six-foot open casket-like sculptures, each one representing an identified historic African American burial ground in Houston. This first iteration of Forsaken Eulogies: Indifference serves as a pilot project that can be replicated in more than thirty African American cemeteries in the Houston area, many of which have been covered by new land and building development.
