Speaking/Sensing Space

George Legrady

Speaking/Sensing Space is a digitally created abstract media environment in which visual imagery, sound, and text are generated through the movement of viewers within a public space. Consisting of a large projection screen and a six-channel surround sound system, the work interacts with viewers via a custom camera tracking system operated by original software. The projections consist of textural images that are repeatedly covered and recovered by “white noise” made up of random letters of the alphabet; this white noise can be “wiped away” by the viewer’s movement within the space. Once a certain level of action is reached, a second visual image is revealed, consisting of a green, blurred surface from which readable texts are drawn to the fore through additional interaction. Ultimately, the focus is on the relationship of the audience’s presence in relation to the environment.
