Pat O'Neill

Moving Image, 2015

Pat O’Neill majored in art at UCLA, and spent his graduate years in Photography. He studied with Robert Heinecken, receiving his MA based largely on two motion picture projects, possibly the first such a degree in art based on moving-image work. His film work assumed a very particular character, based on consideration of the image and on the various ways in which it could be combined with others and altered photo-chemically. Over the past fifty years he has completed 23 films, initially in 16mm and later in 35mm, which have received international recognition. His work during the 1970s–1990s was supported by his film business along with grants from the NEA, the Guggenheim, and the Rockefeller Foundations. His digitally projected installations have recently been acquired by the Walker Art Center and the Berkeley Art Museum.
