Maria del Carmen Montoya is a new media artist working in performance, sculpture and installation. She has lived and worked throughout Latin America, where she served as the sole interpreter for an assembly of rural villages in San Salvador, an advocate for battered women in Ciudad Juarez and an English teacher for a craft cooperative in Quetzaltenango. Her studio practice explores the personal, emotional and utterly irrational tendencies of technology. She was awarded the Rhizome Commission for New Media for I Sky You. Her work has been shown at SIGGRAPHPERFORMA, New Museum Festival of Ideas, ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art, Venice Biennial of Architecture and Visiones Sonoras, Morelia, Mexico, where she cofounded an artist residency program for multimedia performance art. She lives and works in a forest along the banks of the Willamette River.
