Anita Chang‘s Tongues of Heaven screens as part of the Understanding Taiwan through Film and Documentary Screening Series at SOAS, University of London.

An earlier film, 62 Years and 6500 Miles Between, will also be featured as part of the series. Both a portrait of the filmmaker’s 100-year old activist grandmother and a window into a nation’s soul, Chang navigates cultural, geographic and linguistic distances amidst the exhilarating momentum of Taiwanese self-determination. Through Ama’s story, we see the story of Taiwan: its colonial past, its newfound democracy and the post-colonial diasporic experience.
