Janine Antoni comes to this project as a visual/performance artist collaborating with choroegrapher Stephen Petronio.  The work draws on ideas of transcendence, elevation, and regeneration, recurring themes that stretch from early pagan culture to contemporary times. Known for his rich, kinetic movement language and formal rigor, Petronio employs structural devices such as accumulation, retrograde, and accidental overlay, including new treatments of movement from dances created over the company’s 28-year history, to heighten the thematic content. LLD features an original electroacoustic score by Son Lux that draws from a range of spiritual music and texts, from early American slave songs to the meditative drones of Eastern mysticism. Son Lux and an ensemble comprised of members of Bon Iver and yMusic and 30 members of The Young People’s Chorus of New York City perform the score live. Janine Antoni is a powerful, yet subtle physical presence in the work—her suspended state of meditation serves as both visceral contrast and anchor in Petronio’s continually shifting world. Costumes are by H. Petal and lighting design is by Petronio’s longtime collaborator Ken Tabachnick.
