The Bronx: History of Now

Abigail DeVille

The Bronx: History of Now involves the construction of 100 site-specific sculptural installations using found objects, fragments of histories and community narratives to tell the story of the present moment in the Bronx. DeVille uses black holes as a metaphor for historical erasure; her black hole installations serve as a temporary testament to the cultural vitality, passion and love Bronxites have for a borough with a long melting pot tradition. The structure and programming of these black holes varies based on the history of the specific location and dialogue with community members. Recorded oral histories will be made into a web-based, downloadable tour for the duration of each piece. The final product will be a historical document in the form of a book and documentary shorts.
