Five Capital Executions in China

Zhi Lin

Begun three years after the Tiananmen Square massacre, Zhi Lin focused on a series of paintings about brutal torture methods used in China for centuries. The paintings, layered with screen printing, surrounded by a border and red curtain, are in a style consciously analogous to Western art in the late Medieval/early Renaissance eras. They combine the aura of a street festival with the obscured images of executions.
