The Lord and the Pork Barrel

Vanalyne Green

The Lord and the Pork Barrel is an experimental digital video documentary. Narrated by a frustrated God depicted as an upper-class British gay man, the video takes a humorous, historical look at how politics is infused with religious iconography and language. Combining archival footage, comedic reenactments, and media coverage of current events, The Lord and the Pork Barrel is the first non-autobiographical project by Green, whose previous videos have investigated American myths and institutions via her own experience. An additional theme is the archetypal story of the citizen pilgrimage to Washington, D.C., as embodied by such diverse sources as the Million Man March and the film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
