Creative Capital held its first Artists' Retreat from August 17-20 at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the woods of Maine. Forty-five of 75 current grantees and 22 consultants attended, traveling from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sante Fe, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York for a weekend that one artist described as "the best month of my life!"

Several other participants felt the Artists' Retreat will have a major impact upon their careers, as a result of the contacts they made, the top-level advice they received during workshops and one-on-one consultations, and the opportunity to see so much exciting work when the artists presented their Creative Capital-funded projects. A digital artist observed: "I had meetings with two major dealers who had an opportunity to pre-screen my work - Where else would that happen?" An artist based in the Midwest said, that by the end of the retreat, he'd "found a new community" of artists and consultants nationwide who are working in new media. A performer told us that she would feel more confident negotiating with presenters in the future, thanks to the positive feedback that she received on her presentation.

Creative Capital will be evaluating the Artists' Retreat over the coming weeks, and we look forward to sharing what we've learned about the needs of individual artists with our colleagues in the grantmaking field
