September 17, 2001

_Arts foundation will award up to 40 grants, from $5,000 to $20,000, in the fields of performing arts and emerging fields_ NEW YORK, NY (September 17, 2001) — Creative Capital Foundation is accepting proposals for its 2001—02 grant cycle supporting work in the performing arts and emerging fields. Through November 5th (extended from October 31st), artists may submit projects in these two categories–including for performance arts: dance, theater, spoken word, and experimental opera, and for emerging fields: new media and computer-based art, robotics, digital design, experimental literature, sound art, and multidisciplinary projects. The application form is available online at www.creative-capital.org or by mail. Now in its third year, the New York-based foundation has awarded grants and supplemental support to 118 artists from 24 states. Founded in 1999, Creative Capital evolved from a response by philanthropists, arts professionals, artists, and business leaders to government cuts in funding to individual artists. Its model differs from those of traditional grantmakers in that the foundation commits to a long-term approach to working with artists. Artists in Creative Capital’s grant program have access to professional services, including assistance in fundraising, networking, marketing, and strategic planning. In addition, grantees agree to share with Creative Capital a small percentage of any profits made by the project, if any. While no projects to date have generated income, it is the principle of giving back to the arts community that is emphasized. How to Apply Artists may request from $5,000 to $20,000 to fund a specific project. All applications must be received by Monday, November 5, 2001. Applicants are encouraged to apply online but may mail in proposals or drop them off at the New York offices of Creative Capital Foundation, 65 Bleecker Street, 7th floor, New York, NY by 5:00 PM on that day. To request an application, artists may contact Creative Capital at EmailList@creative-capital.org. A complete list of grantees is available at the foundation’s website. About Creative Capital Founded in January 1999, Creative Capital Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that supports individual artists pursuing innovative approaches to form and content in the performing, visual, literary, and media arts, and in emerging fields including computer-based work, experimental literature, and other new art forms.
