Creative Capital,
a nonprofit organization, acts as a catalyst for the
development of adventurous and imaginative ideas by supporting artists
who pursue innovation in form and/or content in the performing and visual
arts, film and video, and in emerging fields. We are committed to working
in partnership with the artists whom we fund, providing advisory services
and professional development assistance along with multi-faceted financial
aid and promotional support throughout the life of each Creative Capital
project.

LYNN HERSHMAN LEESON: THE FUTURE IS HISTORY
Lynn Hershman Leeson’s Creative Capital-supported film, (H)ERrata: Women, Art and Revolution, combines interviews, artwork, and rarely seen archival film and video footage to chronicle the feminist art movement in the United States from 1968 to the present. The parallel arc of the artist’s career is being chronicled through a year-long retrospective at six leading institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area: the de Young Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, The Hess Collection, the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, New Langton Arts, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. CAMPAIGNING THROUGH TIME
Keep an ear out this summer for some stirring, and perhaps eerily familiar, speeches from not so far bygone eras of political upheaval. Port Huron Project is Mark Tribe’s Creative Capital-supported series of reenacted protest speeches from the 1960s and ‘70s, each performed at their original site. Half of the restagings completed, the three remaining take Tribe to Los Angeles (Exhibition Park, July 19), Oakland (DeFremery Park, August 2), and New York (United Nations, September 7), for speeches by César Chávez, Angela Davis, and Stokely Carmichael, respectively. ALL ABOARD! GRANTEES ABROAD
This summer, grantee projects traverse the globe, from Reynold Reynolds’ recent Best of Festival Award at the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, Germany, to Amelia Rudolph and Project Bandaloop’s performance at the European Capital of Culture Festival in Stavanger, Norway on August 23 and 24. Other global happenings include Anita Chang at the Fukuoka Asian Film Festival in Japan, July 4–6; Sanford Biggers at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, through July 5; Danny Hoch at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal, July 8–20. CHAIN OF OPPORTUNITY
Individual Artist Fellowships presented by the City of Los Angeles went to three of our own: Erin Cosgrove, Suzanne Lacy, and David Rousseve. Jake Mahaffy was awarded the LEF Foundation's Moving Image Fund Grant for his Creative Capital-supported project, Free In Deed. Rounding out the season, a total of eight Creative Capital artists were selected for 2008 Tribeca Film Institute Media Fellowships: Billy Luther, Braden King, Michael Rees, Jacqueline Goss, Laura Poitras, lauren woods, Naomi Uman, and Paul Vanouse. |

JUDGE DISMISSES MAIL FRAUD CASE AGAINST BIO-ARTIST KURTZ
A federal judge has dismissed the indictment against Creative Capital artist Steve Kurtz, who was charged with counts of mail and wire fraud. Based on materials that Kurtz used in his art practice, and which were seized by the authorities, he has been under investigation for nearly four years and is reportedly "pleased and relieved that this ordeal may be coming to an end." JOHN SIMON GUGGENHEIM MEMORIAL FELLOWS
An unprecedented number of Creative Capital artists are among the 2008 John
Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation's Fellows. The seven artists to receive this honor are Natalia Almada (2005 film/video), Mason Bates (2006 performing arts), Erika Blumenfeld (2000 visual arts), Bill Daniel (2005 film/video), Rodney Evans (2008 film/video), Danny Hoch (2006 performing arts), and Ruben Ochoa (2005 visual arts). Awarded since 1925, The Guggenheim Fellowships have honored a distinguished list of creative and scholarly individuals, including more than 20 Creative Capital artists. |

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
The
Professional Development
Program was launched in 2003 to offer the career-building component
of Creative Capital's Artist Services
Program to a broader community of artists. The Professional
Development Program has served more than 1,800 artists nationwide,
and features a comprehensive menu of workshops that include a Weekend
Retreat, as well as Day and Evening-long Workshops. [Visit
