The Readers is an installation of film-based portraits of influential women authors, activists, critics, artists and poets. Schneider will film each sitter as she reads a book of her choice, written by a woman author, in her own home or studio, for two hours, watching her as she becomes immersed in the text. This project was inspired by Schneider’s series Reading Women (2012–2014), photographic portraits of 100 friends—mostly artists, writers and musicians living in New York—each sitting while reading a book of her choice, written by a woman author. The authors read by her friends in Reading Women become the subjects of The Readers, further mapping the transmission of ideas among makers, and from one creative generation to the next.
