Awardee: Christopher Wilcha

Christopher Wilcha's first film was about his tenure in the marketing department of the mail order CD and tape club Columbia House. It won Best Documentary awards at the Slamdance, South By Southwest and New York Underground Film Festivals. _The Target Shoots First_ has screened internationally and was broadcast on Cinemax in the spring of 2001 and has been rebroadcast on the Sundance Channel. Wilcha has conceived and directed two successful pilots for MTV: _So Five Minutes Ago_ and _The Social History of the Mosh Pit_; he has also directed commercials and music videos. Wilcha has had artist residencies through The Center for Land Use Interpretation and at The MacDowell Colony. His documentary work includes _Second Hand Stories_, about the economy of used goods across the United States. He received a BA in Philosophy from New York University and an MFA from CalArts in Film/Video.

Project: Roads Belong in the Landscape

_Roads Belong in the Landscape_ is a first-person essay film about natural and industrial history, personal memory and public policy, adolescent perception and adult realization, and the looming obsolescence of both walking and 16mm filmmaking. A native of New Jersey, Wilcha returns to his home state to follow his memories of the local landscape and his new understanding of the area, much of which is designated as a toxic waste site. In Wilcha's film, observations and images accumulate over time via subtitles, maps, still photographs and other alternative narrative techniques. Extant sound melds with descriptive texts as a way to connect personal history and corporate policy.
