Film and Video

An animator by training, Los Angeles–based artist Miwa Matreyek uses video installation, animation, and the movement of her own body to create dreamlike moving image panoramas. Recalling both the shadow plays of early cinema pioneer Lotte Reiniger and expanded cinema works of the 1960s, Matreyek's work reimagines these approaches in the context of digital animation and multimedia theater. (She is also part of the multidisciplinary collective Cloud Eye Control). Her This World Made Itself (2013) is a kaleidoscopic journey through history, beginning with the Big Bang, which explores our planet in moments of sublimity and discordance alike. The work's ethereal electronic score heightens the wonderment of being immersed in a visual world born of the artist’s imagination. Myth and Infrastructure (2010) and Dreaming of Lucid Living (2007) similarly present fantastical, intricate tableaux of seascapes, city scenes, and interior spaces. While Matreyek has presented her work internationally, these three pieces are being performed in a single program for the first time in New York.
