spaceramen: In my bio, should I include the theoretical underpinnings
within my work or should I just focus on my background and experience?
CreativeCapApp: Use bio for your background and experience. There is
another question on the inquiry form that allows you to contextualize
your work theoretically and otherwise.
spaceramen: My project is a form of public intervention that incorporates
sound. Would this be considered an emerging field?
CreativeCapApp: Yes, it sounds like it could be.
spaceramen: I am the founder of a guerilla art project. Although I invite
people to work on different phases of the project, I am the person who
conceives of the work, produces and designs it. Can I apply as an individual?
CreativeCapApp: Yes, you may. The others may be considered work-for-hire
scoobyfox: My project involves teaching law with the audience in a comic
piece of theatre. At this point a law professor resource/reference knows
the most about the project though other theatre folks also know my work
and development of interactive theatre/performance. Is there a preference
that the reference come from the "traditional " arts field?
AskSeanAtCC: The person needs to be familiar with your work in general,
and should be able speak to your practice's consistency etc, but they
do not have to be from the "traditional" art field.
scoobyfox: So it's the familiarity with my existing work that matters
most re: the reference, not familiarity with the proposed project?
CreativeCapApp: Best of all, your reference should be able to speak knowledgeably
on both.
Coop r dog: There is a project classification for new genre, under the
emerging artist grant. I have submitted a film under that grant. Was
that incorrect?
AskSeanAtCC: We are not funding film and video this cycle, but if you
can make a strong argument as to why your project should be considered
under emerging field, please do.
Rep319: On the definition of emerging - I am recycling analog material
and manipulating it digitally to produce visual images that suggest matrixes
that have no apparent relationship with the source material. Though some
elements may be 2D or 3D, the final results is new and the algorithms
used are emerging as they have never been used to create visually hypnotic
images in the past, that I know of at any rate. Does this qualify since
the analog materials were originally shot in film or video, but the use
is nothing like creating a documentary or narrative film. It is video
art.
AskSeanAtCC: Video art is not being funded this year. Again, if you can
make a solid arguement as to how this is not film/video, but emerging
fields, then apply.
Rep319: Ok, got it. I was thinking digital video as electronic art. So
I have a follow up. I am working with a choreographer. I use ephemeral
footage - public domain - to make projection elements. He choreographs
and performs. The multi-arts project will premiere in 2006 and, therefore,
should qualify, no?
AskSeanAtCC: Yes, as long as it doesn’t premiere too soon in 2006.
Aim for a premiere no earlier than late spring. We want time to enter
into the project as a partner.
Rep319: Do I submit under emerging fields - multidisciplinary or under
performing arts
AskSeanAtCC: Sounds like performing arts.
Coop r dog: One last question: my professional reference is familiar
with the project and its possibilities, but he does not have the theoretical
background to explain the core philosophies. Should I brief him?
CreativeCapApp: Yes, you want him to be able to represent you at your
best.
scoobyfox: Do you have guidelines or limitations re artist fees?
CreativeCapApp: The rule of thumb for artist fees is 15-25% of total
project budget.
scoobyfox: Do you have a working link to the web page with past evaluators?
CreativeCapApp: See http://www.creative-capital.org/application/panelists.html
spaceramen: My project is the second phase of an ongoing project which
has similar concerns but different. tactics than the first phase. Is
this okay?
CreativeCapApp: Yes, but please explain in context of larger project.
spaceramen: Within my project I use numerous strategies to activate public
space. Should I just propose one aspect or can I include multiple projects?
CreativeCapApp: You can include a project with multiple phases or strategies,
but not multiple projects. You may only apply with one project per grant
year.
spaceramen: If I am working on two or three strategies simultaneously
do I need to be really specific about each one? I’m concerned about
the 1500 char. Restriction.
CreativeCapApp: Please give us a sense of the whole within the allotted
space.
spaceramen: How soon can I ask for additional funding for another phase
of the project?
AskSeanAtCC: Please see the sample contract on the website: http://www.creative-capital.org/application/contract.html
aibraw: I am just starting the research area of my project. I expect
to be doing the research into the beginning of 2006, then I want to start
rehearsal/showcasing material, with final performance in fall of 2007.
Can I ask for research support?
CreativeCapApp: Yes, we would want to support the whole project, including
the research phase.
aibraw: So in the budget, I should include the whole thing?
CreativeCapApp: Yes
aibraw: Do I include what I expect to do this year?
CreativeCapApp: Include as contextual information
aibraw: When you say that you want us to include date of birth in the
bio, does that mean in the text part as well as the form that we fill
out?
CreativeCapApp: Please list in bio as well.
aibraw: Is there an advantage to doing the bio or resume forms. Why is
there a choice?
CreativeCapApp: The choice reflects different standards for different
disciplines.
aibraw: Most of my work has been done in dance, but this work is going
to include actors, video, film, music--it seems that it’s interdisciplinary.
CreativeCapApp: That would be fine, under performing arts.
