Please note that this transcript has been edited. The order of questions and responses, and mistakes in spelling have been changed in some cases to clarify the  content of the online conversation.

Moderated by:

AskSeanAtCC: Sean Elwood, Director of Grantmaking and Artist Services.

CreativeCapApp: Kemi Ilesanmi, Program Coordinator for Grantmaking & Artist Service Associate

______________________________________________________________

tuankn77: It is mentioned that "Funded artists agree to share a small percentage of any profits generated by their projects with Creative Capital, which applies those funds toward new grants." Please explain.

AskSeanAtCC: That is described in the contract: http://www.creative-capital.org/application/contract.html

tuankn77: How is the percentage determined of the "share" and for how long are the artists bound to this?

AskSeanAtCC: The percentage of our contribution to the project after the project has turned a "profit" means that you have paid yourself and for all costs associated with the project. Then you begin to pay back the percentage of our contribution until it equals the original grant amount. After that it becomes half of that percentage in perpetuity

misstisab: Can we apply for non-profit status (tax and donation purposes) and still qualify for a Creative Capital grant, or must we stay as we are?

CreativeCapApp: You must apply as an individual or collaborative team even if you are a non-profit.

misstisab: My collaborator and I have a 5-year, 5-part multidisciplinary publication/electronic media project. Does this qualify?

CreativeCapApp: Yes, it does

misstisab: Should we then state our project completion date as 2009, or should we refer only to the completion date for each part, meaning 2006 for the next?

CreativeCapApp: If applying for whole project, 2009. If for a part of project, 2006.

misstisab: Is there any form of confirmed, institutional support received that would disqualify us?

CreativeCapApp: No

misstisab: Is there more info on the emerging fields/innovative literature categories on the site?

CreativeCapApp: Yes, hit the FAQ button when asked to choose a discipline.

misstisab: Does it matter that our project will launch its first part this spring?

CreativeCapApp: For a 5yr multi-part project, that sounds fine.

misstisab: Just to clarify: our project contains innovative literature and is multidisciplinary (hypertext/internet art, visual art). What category is best for us?

CreativeCapApp: You should determine that based on where you are best known and feel you would be best evaluated. Again, see definitions in FAQ and look at past grantees in emerging fields: http://channel.creative-capital.org/

misstisab: Thank you; I have looked at past grantees. I will look again for those doing innovative/arts/electronic media/pub projects.

tuankn77: My project is an animation based on Vietnamese folklores, appealing to the general public who are interested in other cultures, will this category fit under video or what?

AskSeanAtCC: That sounds like film/video, which comes around again in 2007. Unless this is computer animation?

tuankn77: Yes, this is computer animation, well I will use the computer for composite, coloring, effects, sound, but hand drawings will be used a lot as well

AskSeanAtCC: Be sure to state clearly how this fits into Emerging Fields

tuankn77: I think this was addressed, but to clarify: If my project is receiving funding under another non-profit as well as other sources, can I still apply to the CC grant?

AskSeanAtCC: Yes, you can.

misstisab: To clarify: CC doesn't fund projects that are in distribution/exhibition mode, but for a multi-part project, each current, in-production part qualifies, correct?

CreativeCapApp: Yes, that is right.

tuankn77: Can I put hardware and software as part of the budget, or does CC expect I have everything already?

AskSeanAtCC: Add it to the budget.

misstisab: If invited to apply for the CC grant, can I add a collaborator?

CreativeCapApp: Yes, but they must also satisfy our eligibility requirements: 25 or over, US citizen or permanent residence, not a full time student

misstisab: Great. What don't you want to see on the LOI, besides poetic language?

CreativeCapApp: See guidance in the program director interview: http://www.channel.creative-capital.org/exclusive-grantseekingtips.html

misstisab: Can you talk more about CC’s ideas behind the innovative literature category. I'm thrilled and curious; it's new, yes?

CreativeCapApp: Yes, it's new. Some of our thinking behind it is in the FAQ section and the above cited program directors interview.

misstisab: Got it; thanks, and thanks for adding the category; very few acknowledge innovative/experimental literature expressly, as you know.

CreativeCapApp: We’re equally thrilled to be stepping into that arena!

tuankn77: CC mentions they provide assistance/guidance to the artist once they receive the grant. How does that work and what if the artist does not want the help?

CreativeCapApp: See http://creative-capital.org/programs/index.html for more info on our 4-part system

misstisab: For the full application, if invited, will we need to send a sample of the first volume of our project? Is it too soon to ask that?

CreativeCapApp: Yes, that would be very helpful at that time.

tuankn77: Also, is it possible to contact past grant recipients to ask them questions about their experiences w/CC or other questions about their proposal

AskSeanAtCC: Only if they are already your friends. We don't facilitate or encourage contact otherwise.

tuankn77: If my project were a series, would I propose the first part of the series or the entire series?

AskSeanAtCC: The whole series.

misstisab: The Emerging Fields category for past grantees allows a search by medium, and print is not an option. If we're doing print and electronic, we're out of the emerging fields category?

CreativeCapApp: Incorrect, you can apply with such a project in Emerging Fields. We like the artist to determine their own category; however, we may switch them if another category seems a clearly better fit for their project.

misstisab: Thank you for reminding me of that. App anxiety.

misstisab: If we're doing a publication project that gets distributed for sale, and we get a CC grant, how do we pay CC their percentage? Or should we never use a distributor and figure out how to make our project available ourselves?

AskSeanAtCC : I don't understand your last question. Either would work, under the right circumstances.

CreativeCapApp: See sample contract: http://creative-capital.org/application/contract.html

enthusiasticlab: If one collaborator in a performing arts project has applied to graduate school but is not enrolled at the time of application, is she qualified to appear on the inquiry form?

AskSeanAtCC: She can't be a student when she applies or during the project.

Misstisab: Thanks; reading sample contract now. Can the CC production/distribution grant help us distribute our project ourselves (storage, shipping, postage), instead of paying a 70/30 split to a distributor?

CreativeCapApp: Grantees may discuss such issues w/CC thus helping to determine what is best for project.

misstisab: Just want to say thanks to CC for providing this forum; all my questions for now are answered, or will be via the info-packed site! Very best to all!

AskSeanAtCC: Thank you.
