FUNDING INNOVATION
AN OVERVIEW OF CREATIVE CAPITAL'S FIRST FIVE YEARS
December, 2003

The Creative Capital Foundation, which was set up to explore whether venture capital concepts were applicable and useful in the cultural arena, has begun a transition from a successful dot com era experiment into an ongoing, multi-faceted support structure for individual artists. Over the last five years, we have provided in-depth support to 158 creative projects and are now adapting our programs for a wider audience, a move that could potentially affect hundreds of artists throughout the country each year. Creative Capital views itself as a permanent laboratory, a venue for investigating ways to provide the most effective support to individual artists and for translating successful practices into wider reaching programs.

In this report on their first five years, Creative Capital evaluates the system that has evolved, notes its strengths and challenges, and looks towards the next five years of providing comprehensive support to artistic innovators.
