CREATIVE CAPITAL IN THE MEDIA

Digital Artists Draw Support From a New Foundation

From The New York Times
January 1, 2001
By Matthew Mirapaul

In another sign that the internet is gaining acceptance as a creative medium, a new arts foundation will give nearly $100,000 to support a dozen digital arts projects.

The Creative Capital Foundation has earmarked $91,000 of its initial grants for 12 projects in the "emerging fields" category, which includes Web sites, computer games and CD ROMs.

The Creative Capital grants to digital-art projects account for 16 percent of the total amount being given out by the foundation. They come after several other recent acknowledgements of the emerging medium, including an announcement by the Whitney Museum that for the first time it will feature online works in its next Biennial survey of American art.
